MHS Mark Kelly letter to parents Aug 15, 2011

                                MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL

August 15, 2011

Dear Students and Parents of Malibu High School,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year.  Students, it is time to get ready as school starts on Tuesday, August 30.  Enjoy these final weeks of summer while getting excited to begin a wonderful new school year.  To our incoming 6th Graders, the Class of 2018, we welcome you and your parents to Malibu High School.  You, along with many new students and families, are starting a special journey.  You all are joining a wonderful community of students, teachers, counselors, administrators, support staff and community members who are here to serve and are thrilled to start the new school year.

This year, students and families are receiving our summer mailer electronically.  Our electronic summer mailer contains important items necessary for beginning the school year.  We ask that you carefully review each item contained in the email message titled Back to School Electronic Mailer.  This Mailer will describe the materials needed for our upcoming middle and high school Get Your Stuff (GYS) Days.  GYS Day is your opportunity to get your stuff so you are prepared for the first days of school.  Our high school GYS Day is on Wednesday, August 24 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  The middle school GYS Day is on Thursday, August 25 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  All the information you need is in the Electronic Mailer or is available on our website at http://malibuhigh.org/registration

It has been a busy summer of planning and preparing for school to begin.  Our Measure BB campus improvement projects continue as we underwent a soil remediation project that was required preparation for the construction of our new library, administration and classroom building.  Additionally, work began on our fire alarm system upgrade.  Both projects set the stage for continued progress on our campus improvements, which are in the hands of local and state regulatory agencies.  We expect final approval to come this year and are very excited to see major components get underway.  Be watching for Measure BB updates throughout the year.

This year, teachers, counselors, administrators and support staff will be using a new student information system called Illuminate.  This new system is an integrated system that includes a comprehensive student information database, teacher grade book component and web-based attendance tool.  The Illuminate information system also includes a parent portal with grade and attendance information that can be used to monitor your student’s progress.  We are excited about the potential for Illuminate to enhance our communication with parents regarding how students are achieving in their courses.

The schooling experience is about outstanding teaching and learning.  For teachers, the start of the school year comes with enthusiasm and the excitement of engaging with a new group of students.  We are ready to continue to provide the excellent teaching and learning that you have come to expect from Malibu High School.  Our commitment is to guide students to achieve academically, teach them to be healthy individuals and to foster their social responsibilities to others.  These are our learning goals.  We want the very best for our young people and welcome the start of the new school year to once again begin this very important work.

Sincerely,

Mark O. Kelly
